Rescuers search after a magnitude 7 earthquake kills at least 16 people
A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the high-altitude city of Nagqu on Thursday evening, killing at least 16 people and injuring 76, according to local authorities cited by Reuters. Hundreds of homes collapsed, more than 12,000 people were relocated and hundreds of aftershocks were recorded as crews worked in remote terrain. The injury count rose after the first reports, so totals may change.
Why Americans should know: The disaster tests emergency access in a strategically sensitive, hard-to-reach region and could require prolonged winter relief. It also matters to Americans with family, travel, humanitarian or business ties across China and the Himalayas.
