Hurricane Polo brings dangerous conditions near the Pacific coast
Polo reached Category 5 strength off southwestern Mexico on September 22, prompting port closures and school suspensions. Forecasts called for the storm to move near the coast, with heavy rain, dangerous surf and possible flooding even without a direct landfall. The storm formed earlier; its rapid strengthening and coastal preparations are the new developments.
Why Americans should know: Americans with family or travel plans along Mexico’s Pacific coast could face disrupted transportation and dangerous conditions. A forecast keeping the center offshore does not mean nearby communities are safe from rain or waves.
