Nationwide blackout interrupts electricity supplies
Cuba’s electrical grid collapsed Friday, September 18, after a transmission failure, leaving millions without power. By Friday evening, electricity had returned to some Havana neighborhoods, with hospitals receiving priority. Those limited restorations did not establish that service had recovered nationwide.
Why Americans should know: For Cuban-American families and Americans visiting the island, outages can disrupt communication, refrigeration and water supplies. Conditions may differ substantially between neighborhoods.
