Leaders say U.S. security agreement will preserve sovereignty
Greenland and Denmark said September 19 that a planned agreement expanding America’s military presence would not transfer sovereignty to Washington. The agreement was announced Friday; Saturday’s clarification is the new development. Signing is expected next week, with parliamentary action still required and important terms undisclosed.
Why Americans should know: This directly concerns American military operations in the Arctic and relations with a NATO ally. Expanded access for U.S. forces should not be confused with American ownership of Greenland.
