Drone attacks sink one cargo ship and damage another
Drones struck two commercial ships near Bulgaria's Black Sea coast Tuesday, sinking the Guinea-Bissau-flagged HS Dignity and damaging the Malta-flagged Chelsea 3. Bulgarian officials said five people were rescued from the sunken ship and 11 remained missing, while all 15 aboard the other vessel were evacuated. Bulgaria has not formally identified the attacker; Ukraine blamed Russia, which had not responded publicly.
Why Americans should know: The attacks threaten commercial shipping near a NATO ally and a route important to global grain exports. They also raise the risk that the Ukraine war will expand farther into civilian maritime traffic and require a stronger NATO response.
