Government forces enter Mekelle after Tigrayan leaders announce a retreat
Ethiopian federal forces and allied fighters have taken control of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, according to residents, a humanitarian source and a pro-government militia source cited by Reuters. The Tigray People's Liberation Front said it had withdrawn and would temporarily relocate the regional government. The wider offensive began last month; today's new development is the reported capture of the regional capital after the airport changed hands.
Why Americans should know: Mekelle is the political and logistical center of a conflict that could deepen a humanitarian emergency and draw in countries across the Horn of Africa. Capturing the city is a major battlefield shift, but it does not establish that the fighting is over or that civilians are safe.
