Ethiopia and Eritrea sever ties as regional tensions rise
Ethiopia closed its embassy in Eritrea and ordered 10 Eritrean diplomats to leave; Eritrea responded by severing diplomatic ties. Ethiopia and Egypt also expelled one another's diplomats as fighting continued in northern Ethiopia. The conflict and Thursday's explosions in Addis Ababa were already developing; today's new development is the diplomatic rupture and the African Union's call for all three countries to exercise maximum restraint.
Why Americans should know: A broader conflict could destabilize the Horn of Africa near important Red Sea shipping routes and complicate American diplomacy, aid and security partnerships. The exchange of diplomats does not prove the accusations that neighboring governments are supporting armed groups.
