Counterterrorism investigation expands after arrests near U.S.-used air base
British police said five men arrested near RAF Fairford are now being held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, and counterterrorism officers are leading the investigation. Three vehicles appeared to be traveling toward the base, about 85 households were evacuated and an explosives unit examined the scene. Yesterday's edition covered the initial explosives arrests; today's new development is the counterterrorism classification. Authorities are examining a possible Iran link, but have not established one.
Why Americans should know: RAF Fairford hosts U.S. Air Force personnel and bombers. The investigation directly concerns the security of an American-used installation, but arrests and an investigative theory are not proof of guilt or state involvement.
